Surprise! Libs Heart Socialism

Socialism as a political buzz word that has waxed and waned over the years. Most years the “s-word” isn’t thrown around much in political discourse. That changed during President Barack Obama’s candidacy when socialism made a comeback. Now with big government spending spiraling out of control, tax increases in the offing and unprecedented consolidation of power over the private sector at the hands of the Obama Administration, socialism itself is in vogue. Well, at least with the ruling political class in the White House and in the upper echelons of Congress.

But what do Americans think about “socialism?” The results are not all that surprising and may explain a thing or two about the November elections and the recent stunner in Massachusetts.

Only 36% Of Americans View Socialism Positively. “More than one-third of Americans (36%) have a positive image of ‘socialism,’ while 58% have a negative image.”  (Frank Newport, “Socialism Viewed Positively By 36% Of Americans,” Gallup, 2/4/10)

So who are the 36%? As you might have guessed, the 36% is comprised mostly by Democrats and Liberals.

“A Majority Of 53% Of Democrats Have A Positive Image Of Socialism, Compared To 17% Of Republicans.”  (Frank Newport, “Socialism Viewed Positively By 36% Of Americans,” Gallup, 2/4/10)

“Sixty-One Percent Of Liberals Say Their Image Of Socialism Is Positive, Compared To 39% Of Moderates And 20% Of Conservatives.”  (Frank Newport, “Socialism Viewed Positively By 36% Of Americans,” Gallup, 2/4/10)

Heartening, 61% of Americans view “capitalism” favorably, as they should. Socialism is antithetical to the American Way. And that is one reason Democrats were trounced in Virginia and New Jersey in November and destroyed by Senator Scott Brown in Massachusetts.
