Morning Dose Of Reality: Troubling Signs For DEMs

According to a CNN/Opinion Research poll, Americans are evenly divided in the preference of who would do a better job controlling Congress. Why is this significant? Less than a year ago, Democrats enjoyed a 25% lead.

“40 Percent Of People Questioned Say The U.S. Would Be Better Off If Democrats Ran Congress.”  (Paul Steinhauser, “CNN Poll: GOP Erased Party Popularity Gap In Congress,” CNN’s Political Ticker, 12/10/09)

“39 Percent Feel Things Would Be Better If Republicans Took Charge On Capitol Hill.”  (Paul Steinhauser, “CNN Poll: GOP Erased Party Popularity Gap In Congress,” CNN’s Political Ticker, 12/10/09)

“Support For Democrats Is Down From A 10-Point Advantage In August And A 25-Point Margin In January.”  (Paul Steinhauser, “CNN Poll: GOP Erased Party Popularity Gap In Congress,” CNN’s Political Ticker, 12/10/09)

This jibes with a poll we reported on earlier in December which found Americans identifying themselves as Democrats falling and those identifying themselves as Republicans gaining. The number of Americans “considering themselves Democrats” stands at 36%, the “lowest percentage in 48 months.”

“Americans Calling Themselves Democrats Fell By Almost 2 Whole Points Just In The Month Of November.”  (Andrew Malcolm, “Poll Finds Adults Identifying As Republicans Increase, While Democrats Dwindle,” Los Angeles Times, 12/3/09)

“The Percentage Calling Themselves Republican Is Lower -- 33.1%. However, Unlike The Democrats, That Number Is Increasing, Up From 31.9% The Previous Month.”  (Andrew Malcolm, “Poll Finds Adults Identifying As Republicans Increase, While Democrats Dwindle,” Los Angeles Times, 12/3/09)

“The Current Gap In Party Identifiers Is Only 2.9%, The Smallest Since December, 2007.”  (Andrew Malcolm, “Poll Finds Adults Identifying As Republicans Increase, While Democrats Dwindle,” Los Angeles Times, 12/3/09)

These numbers have to be causing Democrats serious heart burn, no? We’re about 11 months from the mid-term elections and the Democrats are losing ground and losing it fast. But then again, maybe they just don’t believe these polls. How else to explain why they keep pushing ObamaCare, even as support continues to plummet?
