Each Problem Deserves A Disproportionate Tax Increase

Seriously, is the answer to every woe a tax increase? That’s the way Democrats seem to think. It’s a knee-jerk reaction. Raise taxes to pay for whatever may come.

Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) Is Calling For Tax Increase To Pay For More Troops In Afghanistan. “Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said higher-income Americans should be taxed to pay for additional troops sent to Afghanistan and that NATO should provide half of the new soldiers.”  (Viola Gienger, “High-Income Tax May Be Needed For Afghan War Cost, Levin Says,” Bloomberg, 11/20/09)

Increase Tax On “Wealthier Taxpayers” Because They’ve “Done Well.” “That cost, Levin said, should be paid by wealthier taxpayers. ‘They have done incredibly well, and I think that it’s important that we pay for it if we possibly can’ instead of increasing the federal debt load, the senator said.”  (Viola Gienger, “High-Income Tax May Be Needed For Afghan War Cost, Levin Says,” Bloomberg, 11/20/09)

“An ‘Additional Income Tax To The Upper Brackets, Folks Earning More Than $200,000 Or $250,000,’ Could Fund More Troops, Levin, A Michigan Democrat Said.”  (Viola Gienger, “High-Income Tax May Be Needed For Afghan War Cost, Levin Says,” Bloomberg, 11/20/09)

It’s not surprising Levin would call for a tax increase to pay for additional troops in Afghanistan. I don’t think he’s ever met a tax increase he didn’t relish. What is truly mindboggling is the rationale: people who have worked really hard and have been fortunate enough to enjoy the fruits of their labor are somehow responsible for shouldering the burden of troop increases in Afghanistan… if President Barack Obama ever makes a decision to do so.

Hello, Carl!? Do you recall that the reason that we are in Afghanistan is because Osama Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and Al Qaeda planned the attacks of 9/11 from the sanctuary of Afghanistan under the aid and comfort of the Taliban and Mullah Mohammed Omar? Those attacks were an act of war on America. The War on Terror is shouldered by every American because it is the American way of life that is at stake. No one person is more responsible than another to pay for the war no matter how “well” they’ve done in life.
