On CNN, just minutes ago, Talk Back host Carol Costello proposed putting the National Guard on the scene, specifically in places like Chicago, to stem gun violence. Here’s her post on Facebook. She makes the point that the National Guard was successfully sent into New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina to stop looting and the chaos that enveloped the city. On the show, Costello actually said the idea “sounds pretty good."
This is stunning. It’s easy to get worked up about gun violence and the tragic deaths in Newtown, Connecticut, and the daily killings in Chicago. But what is it with this obsession by liberals, proposing radical solutions like restricting 2nd Amendment rights of law abiding citizens by banning so-called “assault weapons” and large capacity ammunition magazines, mandating universal background checks – including private sales – and now even mobilizing the National Guard?
Today the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Chaired by Senator Pat Leahy (D-VT), began hearings on legislation designed to restrict 2nd Amendment rights by banning so-called “assault weapons” and large capacity ammunition magazines, mandate universal background checks, including private sales, and a number of other measures.
We are at this juncture because liberal Democrats are using the tragic Newtown, Connecticut shooting – that took the lives of twenty children and six adults while at school, as well as the mother of the shooter – as an excuse to restrict law abiding citizens from exercising their God given right to defend themselves, their families and their property.
So many have written extensively on the subject of gun rights and have done so much more eloquently than I could hope to. But I haven’t seen much in the way of any substantive discussion about moral equivalency.
Our mounting debt and inability to constrain ever-growing spending poses a national security threat to our Republic because we borrow about 40 cents on every dollar we spend, much of it coming from foreign creditors. Oh don’t take my word for it, take it from those in charge of the defense of America:
U.S. Director Of National Intelligence James Clapper: “The debt does pose a potential threat to our national security . . . The financial relationship we have with China is illustrative of that.” (Phil Stewart, “U.S. Intelligence Faces Belt Tightening,” Reuters, 2/10/11)
In February 2009, on a party line vote, Democrats passed that massive boondoggle of a so-called stimulus bill. You know the one I’m talking about? It’s the one that Vice President Joe Biden said would keep unemployment from peaking at higher than 7% with the stimulus and would shoot to 8.8% without it.
“As Figure 1 shows, even with the large prototypical package, the unemployment rate in 2010Q4 is predicted to be approximately 7.0%, which is well below the approximately 8.8% that would result in the absence of a plan.” (Christina Romer and Jared Bernstein, “The Job Impact Of The American Recovery And Reinvestment Plan,” Office of the Vice President Elect Joe Biden, 1/9/09)
Curious. The Obama Administration contends the 2009 elections have no bearing on the President’s legislative agenda and do not portend any kind of trouble for Democrats in the 2010 elections. Why then, after losing the gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey, is Vice President Joe Biden going to Michigan next Monday to stump for two vulnerable Democrats?
“Unemployment Rose In 23 States Last Month As The Economy Struggled To Create Jobs In The Early Stages Of The Recovery.” (Christopher S. Rugaber, “23 States Report Higher Unemployment In September,” The Associated Press, 10/21/09)
Vice President Joe Biden has been running around, patting the Administration on the back over how many jobs they’ve save or created.
As we noted earlier, the jobs numbers today are atrocious and downright miserable. There’s an awful lot of folks out there without jobs, trying to get by, scraping together what they can to make ends meet.
One Week Ago, Vice President Joe Biden Said He Never Could Have Imagined The Economic Stimulus Working So Well. “Vice President Joe Biden delivered a rousing review of the government’s economic stimulus plan in a conversation with the nation’s governors. ‘In my wildest dreams, I never thought it would work this well,’ he said.
